One Singer, one song, but which Court Cards?

Published by Alison Cross on

So, here’s a little whimsy to get us eased into Wednesday – there are two well-define characters in this song (and I am NOT apologising for luffing a bit of Kenny Rogers) *defiant face*.

Which Court Cards do you think they might be – right-sides up or reversed?

The Tarot's Court Cards are my specialist area.  They talk to me. Not LITERALLY though ....

(Bit late to the party (as usual)… I wonder which Court card that makes me!)

I would see him as the reversed Knight of Wands – a broken man of action, who has yet to mature to a realisation that he can be emotionally/intellectually more than the action of the knight will let him be.

Maybe she is also a reversed knight – a being unable to see beyond the rewards of action – possibly a reversed female knight of cups. She isn't seeing the love 'action' she needs here, so moving on to find it where physically it is accessible, without tapping into the mental and mature resources that would enable her to view the reversed Knight of Wands as something able to satisfy her needs…

Both need to move beyond the negative side of action to the 'queen' state of emotions, before they can fulfilment.

Great discussion, Alison. This was a fascinating way to break down some court stuff for me.

These are all good points, Carla! They do seem like a Wandsy couple whose relationship has been turned on its head by circumstance.

Poor Ruby's character portrait from the word go is all about artifice – a false woman – even from the first two lines!

For me, Ruby is definitely Queen of Wands, as she is all about action and needing to be the centre of attention, not really caring much about the feelings of others in the process. Personally I never felt sorry for Ruby when I would hear this song, I always thought she was a heartless bitch for getting dressed and going out and slamming the door and just leaving him there. I don't really read reversals so much as seeing the positive and negative sides of courts at the same time, but I can see how the Vietnam vet seems to me more thwarted King of Wands than the anything from the Cups suit. I don't think he's so much about loving her as he is about wanting her to be there for him and show some loyalty. And he speaks of actions, her actions, the actions he can't perform, and the action he would take against her if he could. Not much about feelings.

Ah yes. "It wasn't me that started that ol' crazy Asian war. But I was proud to go and do my patriotic chore" is a reference to either the Korean Police action or the Vietnam War. My guess is Vietnam but I don't know for sure.

Think it was Vietnam – but will check 🙂

Ruby is the Queen of Cups Rx. I see her as a woman not willing to fulfill her promises to her Knight of Wands. Even broken, he's still full of passion and dreams. He sees her clearly for the cheating b*tch tht she is. His injuries came from his time in the war (if I remember the song correctly…it's not playing for me now.) I loathe cheaters. Can you tell? LOL

    alisoncross · 8th February 2012 at 9:42 pm

That's interesting – I always had quite a lot of sympathy with Ruby in this song – even though she was clearly heading over to the cheating side of town. *grin* You are not a woman to cheat nor be cheated on – I CAN TELL!!!!

Queen of Cups for Ruby. Can't decide between King of Cups Rx and Knight of Wands Rx for him!

    alisoncross · 8th February 2012 at 9:40 pm

They're both good choices for the man in the song 🙂

I'm going to say Queen of Wands for Ruby – sensual, passionate, determined. As for him, Knight of Wands Rx – a broken man, he was full of fire and it's only circumstances that stop him from being that now. The way he talks about the war, and about shooting her if he could, that's Knight of Wands in his worst aspect, to me. No self control, charging into things, which is what probably got him in the state he's in.

    alisoncross · 8th February 2012 at 9:40 pm

Knight of Wands Rx – that's great! I can see that! But I hadn't before you mentioned it – thank you!

Tiana · 8th February 2012 at 9:46 am

Queen of Wands: Willful, passionate, cannot be contained, high maintenance…
AND the
King of Cups: Possessive, loyal but has some difficulty with feelings, and may, if not properly addressed, become a danger to himself…

🙂

    alisoncross · 8th February 2012 at 9:39 pm

Hi Tiana! I see the Queen of Wands….and I see the King of Cups – the Kings (fire) and Cups (water) shows conflict between what he does (or is able to do) and his emotions, for sure 🙂

Vivianne · 8th February 2012 at 9:24 am

Ruby is the Queen of Pentacles. The guy is the King of Cups Rx.

What makes her QofP and what makes him KoCrx? *pops open Pringles and settles down*
