30 Day Tarot Challenge | Day 7

Tarot Thrones: 3 Cups from Mystic Faerie Tarot by Linda RavenscroftQuestion 7: What is my favourite card (both in terms of the decks artwork and divination meaning)

Ooooh this is a tricky one!  How can you select a favourite card from the 78 available? And then how can I pick one image from the hundreds of decks out there?!

Initially, I was going to say that it must be Death that is my favourite card, because when I’m buying a new deck, Death is one of the cards that I go straight to, to see how the artist has rendered it.  If Death appeals to me, then the chances are all the other ones are looking good too!

I have been very greatly enamoured with the DruidCraft Tarot since I first met it in Glastonbury….and also Alexander Daniloff’s Tarot…. but as far as artwork that I loved so much that I wanted to hang it on my wall, it had to be The Archer from The Wildwood Tarot, painted by Will Worthington.

The Archer

I loved the image so much that I begged Will Worthington to sell me the painting! Which he did!  The Archer was delivered to me at TABI’s Tarot Conference a couple of years ago in Birmingham where Will Worthington had agreed to be interviewed by me, and I unwrapped it with shaking hands and a thudding heart.  Mr W makes these magnificent Arts & Crafts frames for his work too – isn’t it stunning?

Words can’t express how much I loved her when I saw her – and still do,  The Archer hangs where she can regularly remind me to focus all my strength on my target, just as she does.  Even when I am lying on the sofa with a Crunchie and a cup of tea I know that she’s willing me to Get OFF my arse and DO something!

I am also deeply besotted by Igraine in the Camelot Oracle, also painted by Will Worthington.

Like I said in another post….*creepy Stephen King voice* I’m his biggest fan πŸ˜€

As far as having a favourite with regard to divinatory meaning – I think that it might be 3 of Cups and Celebration – what’s not to like?!  But what I REALLY like is a card that you can have a lot of discussion about, like Death or The Tower.  Not a barrel of laughs, but something meaty to talk about.

So, what about YOU? Tell me what your favourite cards are (artwork and divinatory meaning)

The Tarot's Court Cards are my specialist area.Β  They talk to me. Not LITERALLY though ....

DruidCraft XX – both the artwork AND the meaning. It calls to me in a way that a basic XX doesn't. The cards I always check first are the Hermit and Temperance.

I'm a double Gemini, no way I can pick a single favourite card from a single deck! Still, the Three of Cups is definitely a good one – I also associate it with female friendships and support πŸ™‚ I'm with Ania on the Star, too! And I have a print of the World from the Shadowscapes Tarot on my living room wall (a gift from a dear friend) which is very beautiful…

I'm also having a hard time picking a favorite. The three cards I like best from my Vikings Tarot deck are: The Sun, Ace of Cups and Three of Cups.

I also have a RW deck I could never connect with, and a Thoth deck.

Ania · 2nd March 2013 at 8:20 pm

I tend to go straight to the Star, then Death and the Queen of Swords.

I love the 2 of Cups from the Deviant Moon, beautiful, and Aeon from the Thoth, I could get lost in that card.

The Thoth is very beautiful, but I cannot get into the Deviant Moon – I find the artwork unsettling, which is, I think, the point lol!

IGRAIN LOOKS THE MOST LIKE YOU.

    Alison Cross · 1st March 2013 at 8:59 am

lol! I wish! Igraine is based on a real portrait – if you search the blog for Camelot Oracle you will see the original photo that Will Worthington worked from.

Thanks for the compliment, I'll take that!!!

I'm a 3 of Cups for fave card but I always look at Death and the Star in a deck.

    Alison Cross · 1st March 2013 at 8:57 am

Have you ever encountered a horrible star and enjoyed the rest of the deck? Or a lovely Star and a horrible deck?

Anonymous · 27th February 2013 at 4:53 pm

Oh, that Archer painting is soo gorgeous! One of my favs from the Wildwood, for sure. I like this depiction much better than the traditional Chariot cards (that is the equivalent, right?).

Igraine looks like she's got a bit of the evil manipulation thing that was passed down to her daughters by Gorlois.

Yep, agree that the bright and positive cards are tempting, but the more challenging ones have more depth also.

But when I answered this question on my blog, I chose the Star from Marchetti's Gilded Tarot Royale. The deck just blows me away, and the Star lady's power is a goal for me. Just fits. Guess I'll have to contract with Ciro to get a framed print…:)

I love The Archer – yes it is the equivalent of The Chariot πŸ™‚

I love Igraine – she's always challenging me. Even now, as I type, she's gazing down upon me!

And yes, you SHOULD get a framed print – so that the energy of the archetype infuses you every time you look at her, Joanne πŸ˜€
