The good old Rider Waite Smith deck is the most po The good old Rider Waite Smith deck is the most popular deck for a reason - it reads like a dream! This is my comfy-slippers tarot deck; it never lets me down. But court cards ARE tricky, so looking at this Knight of Cups, using the 4H method, just focussing on the HEAD for the moment, what can we say? He faces right - this is the direction of the future, optimism, incoming influences etc. The right of a spread might mean something different to you :) Yes, his head is protected by a helmet, but it is open-faced and so while he might not listen to other people (look at that big bolt over his ear!) he is willing to look, willing to be seen. There is metal around his throat - he may speak defensively. He protects his words? He is guarded with his words? His language is constrained in some way. The wings on his helmet (you'll see them on his spurs too) remind us that he is half comprised of AIR so that will help us when we are using the Secret Squirrel Elemental Names to talk about this character too. What is he looking at? He seems to be looking over the top of his grail (in my opinion). So you could take a look at the card lying to the right - this is what he's looking at, focussed on, giving his attention to. What's going on in that other card? How is he interacting with it? Is he offering his Cup to someone? Has he taken the cup from someone? What's this adjacent card's positional value? We should also consider - what has he turned away from? What is he not thinking about, looking at etc. By systematically approaching the card, you can find a lot to say about the tarot court cards, even if its a deck you've never used before. When The Pope comes up for me, it tends to be as a When The Pope comes up for me, it tends to be as a bit of a warning: where am I in danger of becoming a bit of a judgy Pope? Of course, it IS important to have standards and your own personal code of ethics - but they are for YOU to follow. So long as you aren't breaking the law at the same time lol! The mistake we often make is trying to impose our own codes on other people. What a waste of time! Societal norms change; what was unacceptable 50 years now is the norm and that which was acceptable 50 years ago is now NOT acceptable. You're not the pope, so back off a little. You'll find life easier if you stop trying to make others conform to your will :D Life is hard for a lot of people, maybe it's hard for you. But you can still be kind - so give your blessings when you can. And yeah, pat yourself down to make sure that you have got your keys - house keys, car keys, office keys - because you can't get back in if you don't have the right keys? And what are the right keys? For The Pope, it's the certainty of what's Right and what's Wrong. For the rest of us - it's holding fast to what WE believe in and living the best way we know, while appreciating that other folks have different strokes.
If you think that court cards are generally tricky If you think that court cards are generally tricky blighters, animal court cards are the trickiest! Is the 4H method useful when it comes to animal courts? Yes, but it ought not be the only tool that you have in your resource box for deconstructing court cards. My first task is to see what information the image alone will provide. For this, use the 4H method (as far as is practicable). He is inclined to the left of the card, the left of the spread. Therefore, he is thinking about, focussed upon, concentrating on .... a) whatever the left of a spread means for you - it's the past for me. b) whatever the positional value of the card on the left hand side of the spread might be - eg outgoing influences, root cause etc) and c) the artwork of the card in that positional value. The wolf has his eyes closed - he is not actually SEEING what is there - does it present a threat to him? His ears are back and he is howling - so he isn't actually listening (he's making noise himself) He looks like he might eat the moon - what does the moon mean for you? When he eats it - does he destroy it or take it inside? He is howling - he is alone but he communicates his intentions to others vocally and clearly. Those snowy branches seem to radiate from him like thorns - he's not a warm, friendly person. Probably doesn't welcome other people's input lol! Would I say that about any other King of Stones (Pentacles)? Probably not, but it's what I SEE in THIS card. What else could you say about his head? The first of the Hs is HEAD - this is where we find the attention, focus and thoughts of the character Which direction are they looking? I read from left to right, so the left in any layout is Past/Memories/tradition etc and the right is Future/Hopes etc. This Queen faces, and looks to, the left of the card - she is focussed on the past, thinks about the past etc. Her head is open - the top is sliced off by the card's border. This means that (despite wearing a head-protecting crown) she is open to outside influences. Which outside influences? The card above her. If there is no card - maybe you could draw one from your deck. Her headgear reminds me of a judges wig - what might that lead you to say about THIS queen? We cannot see her ears, therefore she doesn't LISTEN to outside influence - so how might that outside influence be transmitted to her? Books? Written material, letters, things she SEES? Your ego can protest and even though life has turned upside down, you insist on holding on to your long-term world view. Take this Hanged Man character - he's hanging upside down, but is he looking at life differently? No, he's not, his head is still the right way up and BOY is that going to hurt. Suspend your ego, go with the flow and see where losing the battle (or argument!) can actually help you win the war (the long-term goal). Don't hold fast to your old beliefs - or disbeliefs.
